My Media Center Life

I used to have a DVR from my cable company. But they are expensive and don't work very well. So I bought a computer from Dell, the Studio Slim Desktop. It looks nice and has HDMI output. Along with it I bought the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 dual TV tuner. It lets me record one show and watch another at the same time. Another important aspect about this card is that it is half-height so it fits in the computer. I run it all through Windows Media Center. (The bundled software isn't that great, but Media Center is awesome.)

This particular bundle comes with a Media Center remote control. In the back of the Remote control receiver is 2 ports to blast IR out to a set-top box. In a post in the future I will explain how to use the blaster to power your TV on and off so you only need the one remote.

So I share a couple of drives on my computer over my home network and I can now view my Pictures and listen to Music on my TV. In a future post I will also explain how to stream your content onto the internet to watch elsewhere or on a phone.
